Edgar Hyche's Story

Edgar Hyche, 93, longtime resident of Roswell, Ga., and member of Roswell First Baptist Church, passed away Friday morning, May 5, 2017, at his home. 
Edgar was born into the family of James Ira and Mary Johnson Hyche in Walker County, Ala., in 1924, the 11th of 12 children. In 1943, Ed was inducted into the Army Air Corps and served his country with honor during the second World War in the Theater of the Pacific.
After his discharge from the Army, he obtained a bachelor of science from Florence State Teachers College and later a master of arts from George Peabody College for Teachers. Ed then began what he thought would be a long career in teaching, serving first at West Point, Ala., then at Ocilla, Ga., and finally, at Druid Hills in Atlanta. In the mid-1950s, Ed was recruited by RCA, a NASA contractor, to work out of Cocoa Beach, Fla. A few years later, Lockheed brought Ed back to the Atlanta area to work as a flight systems analyst at Marietta and later, at Palmdale and Burbank, California. Ed finished his career in aerospace as a civilian contractor for the Air Force located at Edwards AFB.
Ed retired in 1987 and returned to Roswell, where he shared the last 30 happy years of retirement with his wife of 73 years, Alice Laird. 
Edgar is survived by his wife, Alice; sister, Willadean Wright, and brother, James Hyche; children Douglas (and Mary) Hyche of Charlotte, N.C., and Dwight (and Laura) Hyche, of Meridian, Miss.; grandsons, William Douglas Hyche, Joseph Thomas Hyche and Walker Gregory Hyche; great-grandsons, Gabriel Alexander Hyche and Conner Sebastian Hyche.
He is preceded in death by parents, James Ira and Mary Johnson; brothers, Louis, Earnest, William, Herman, Henry, Alford; and sisters, Esther, Minnie, Winnie, Estelle, Mary.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 11, 2017, at the Roswell Funeral Home on Mansell Road, beginning at 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at noon. A second visitation and memorial will be held, Friday, May 12, 2017, at Collins-Burke Funeral Home on Oak Hill Road in Jasper, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
