Elizabeth Prater Brookshire, age 96, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Elizabeth was born in Millport, Alabama on July 25, 1921 to Galbraith Prater and Ethel Hodo Prater. After graduating from high school she attended Judson College for two years. Following graduation from the University of Alabama, Elizabeth taught school in Kennedy, Alabama and then moved to Meridian, Mississippi where she worked for Delta Airlines, and it was here that she met and fell in love with Newton Duncan Brookshire. They were married on December 23, 1946 and remained in Meridian where Dee was President of Brookshire Dairy Products and where they raised their family.

Elizabeth loved her church, Fifteenth Avenue Baptist, and she served God faithfully through the years in Sunday School and WMU. She especially loved to visit those who were homebound and those confined to nursing homes. As a family we were blessed by our mothers devotion and love for Christ and His church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dee, and her two brothers, George Hodo Prater and William Baldwin Prater.

Elizabeth is survived by her four children, Betty Vise (Dr. Richard) of Meridian, MS, N.D. Brookshire, III (Robin) of Fairhope, AL, Jane Wiggins of Jackson, MS and Carolyn Allen (Dr. David) of Huntsville, AL; eleven grandchildren, Rev. Richard Vise (Amy) of Tuscaloosa, AL, Duncan Vise (Grace) of Atlanta, GA, Elizabeth Wilson (Dr. Rod) of Meridian, MS, Rachel Adams (Bailey) of Chattanooga, TN, Lauren Hauge (Jeff) and Lucy Henderly (Jason) of Fairhope, AL, Jeane Carroll Shillito (Rob) and Dr. Matthew Wiggins (Susan) of Hattiesburg, MS, Dr. Newton Wiggins (Bronwen) of Cleveland, OH, Mary Brook Thomas (P.K.) of Starkville, MS, David Allen, Jr, of Washington, D.C. and Martha Ann Thorne (Lee) of Brandon, MS; 23 great grandchildren; and one great grandson on the way.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life Service at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Vise and Dr. Rhett Payne officiating. Burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery.
