Eugene Shirley Cooper, 94, passed away January 5, 2018 at Choctaw General Hospital in Butler, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born July 26, 1923, in Clarke County, Mississippi to Willie and Lillie Cooper. A resident of Butler, Alabama for many years, Gene was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church, serving as a church leader in numerous capacities. Gene was a proud veteran of World War II where he served in the US Army Air Corps as an aerial engineer in the North Africa Campaign. For 25 years, Gene worked at James River Paper Company and was elected president of the UPIU Local 952 for 17 years of his employment there.
A devoted family man, Genes greatest pleasure was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a lifelong fan of the Auburn Tigers and Atlanta Braves and loved watching and talking about both teams with friends and family.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Lillie Cooper; brother, Claude Cooper; sister, Terry Cooper, and daughter, Janice Hayes.
He is survived by his wife, Lurlene M. Cooper; brother, Bobby (Edwina) Cooper; sister, Verniece Scott; son, Jimmy (Susan) Cooper; daughter, Jeannie (Bill) Napper; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1:00 Tuesday, January 9 at First Baptist Church in Butler. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Snell, Mississippi following the services. Officiating will be Reverend Micah Gandy and Reverend Jeremy Sorrells. Pallbearers are Pete Allen, David Ford, John Lewis Jackson, Jimmy Thompson, Rodney Tyson, and John Watson.
