Services for Jimmy Clark Sanders will be held Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home with Reverend Destin Morris officiating. Burial will follow at Center Ridge Baptist Church in DeKalb.
Jimmy Clark Sanders, 84, went to be with the Lord on the morning of March 29, 2017 surrounded by his daughters and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary Davis Sanders; his children, Julie Sanders Summers and Richard of Huntsville, AL, Jill Sanders Vick and Devlyn of Collinsville, MS, Mary Barnette Kinman and Mike of Nacogdoches, TX, and Ben Barnette of Madison, MS; 13 grandchildren, Meagan Crane Mathews and Lance, Will Crane, Taylor Vick, Jenna Vick, Alex Vick, Grant Vick, Josiah Kinman, Selah Kinman, Micah Kinman, Emily Barnette Cox and Trey, Claire Barnette, Benjamin Barnette, and Beau Barnette; two great-grandchildren, Abby and Mason Mathews. He is also survived by four siblings, Mildred Cook of Atlanta, GA, Patsy Key of Dekalb, MS, Charles Glen (Mickey) Sanders of Daleville, MS, and Lewis Sanders and Jean of Meridian, MS.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mattie Sanders of the Kipling Community; and his siblings, Jack Sanders, Jr., Frances Short, Etta Lee Henderson, Robert Curtis Sanders, and Walter Earl Sanders.
He was best known for his exceptional talent for playing football. He started his career while still in high school in Dekalb, MS, and he went on to play at East Mississippi Junior College under Coach Bull Sullivan. From there, he went to Delta State University and is a member of the Hall of Fame. The 1954 team is the only team to be undefeated and untied in the history of the university. He went on to play football for the US Army and was recruited by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Instead of playing professional football, he chose to finish his degree in education at Delta State. He helped coach the football team during his time there. He also had coaching stints on the MS Coast, Forrest, MS, and LaGrange, GA. He retired as a teacher and coach at Northwest Junior High in Meridian, MS. Jimmy was an avid outdoorsman, and he enjoyed spending time gardening and raising his farm animals.
