Ms. Nance, age 85, passed away June 2, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas.
No monuments will be erected, no schools will bear her name and no splashy headlines will proclaim her goodness. They should because of her incredible generosity, her extraordinary compassion and her complete dedication to providing for others when they could not provide for themselves.
From the humblest of beginnings, Lea Holyfield Nance learned from an incredible mother that all people count regardless of race, creed, color or conviction, and that is how she lived her life. She was admired by all and reviled by none. She refused to speak ill of others just as she had been taught. Mother had to deal with tragedy and hardship, poverty and despair, but she refused to allow circumstance to dictate the outcome of her life. Keep your feet moving, one step at a time.
A voracious reader, Mother consumed books almost daily. Through remarkable intellect and intense hard work, she graduated from Matty Hersee School of Nursing number one in her class despite raising two teenage daughters herself. Her nursing career ignited immediately after graduation. Mother worked for years in Home Health caring for hundreds of patients. She was the founder of Magna Home Health where she earned the respect of nurses, physicians, technicians, hospital administrators, janitors, cooks, patients, and aides.
Finishing life in her 85th year, Mother taught her children the importance of family, friends, and faith. Her passion was her work, her children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Music, dancing, traveling, and holidays headed the list of her favorite things. Our family thanks God for all his blessings particularly for the life of our mother.
