Shirley's Story

Funeral services for Mrs. Shirley Griffin will begin Friday, September 1, 2017 at 2:30 at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home with Bro. Hal Bates and Dr. David Sellers officiating. Interment will be held at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Griffin, 79, of Collinsville, MS passed away on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 in Madison, AL surrounded by family.

Mrs. Griffin was born on August 25, 1938 in Laurel, MS. She lived in Laurel, MS and Crescent, OR and beginning in 1949 in Meridian, MS. She was a graduate of Meridian High School, 1956, and Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis, TN in 1959. She received her Bachelors in Nursing from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1973 and her Masters in Nursing from the University Of Mississippi Medical Center in 1979. Her first nursing job was at Anderson Infirmary followed by University of Tennessee Child Development Program, Memphis, Singing River Hospital, Pascagoula, and Rush Foundation Hospital, Meridian. In 1973 Shirley began teaching at Meridian Community College in the Associate Degree Nursing Program. In 1982, she became program head for Associate Degree Nursing. She retired from Meridian Community College in July 2000 to spend more time with her family. Shirley enjoyed painting, reading, family travel, and beautiful music. Her favorite Bible passage was 1 Cor. 13 and she reflected that in the way she loved others. She was a member of First Baptist Church Collinsville. The joy of her life was being a wife, a mother, and a grandmother.
She is survived by son Jack Butch Wilson Griffin (Sarah) and daughter Anita Rhea Munn (Randy). Grandchildren: David Munn, Jonathan Munn, Daniel Munn, and Clara Griffin. Step Grandson Toby Carl, and adopted grandchildren Katie Agent, Noah Agent, and Avery Agent. Brothers: John Chancellor (Dianne), Ernie Chancellor (Judy), Fred Chancellor (Terri) and Brother-In-Law Charles Lowery. Sisters: Betty Harrell, Bernice Bolton, Martha Kerr (Ken), Pat Johnson (Rich). Twenty one nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Jack Wilson Griffin, father John Melvin Chancellor, mother Allie Walker Chancellor, and Sister, Dorothy Nell Lowery.
Pallbearers will be David Munn, Jonathan Munn, Daniel Munn, Max Gressett, Kline Gressett, Jeff Church, Chris Keene, and Jamie Elam.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the MCC Shirley Griffin Nursing Scholarship fund.
