Local musician Stephen Cole Smithson, age 63, passed away peacefully July 4, 2017. He was born on June 18, 1954, to parents Wayne and Faye Jean McAlister and Bobby Smithson in Florence, Alabama. He is survived by his wife, Vanessa Smithson; daughter, Darby Smithson; sisters, Deborah McAlister, Elizabeth Caldwell (James), Patricia Smith, and Wanda Aldridge; brothers, Mike Smithson (Darla) and Brian McAlister (Jean); many nieces and nephews; and honorary brothers, Wayne Rawson (Rita) and Scott McQuaig (Kelly). He was preceded in death by beloved sister, Suzanne Osborn; and parents, Wayne McAlister and Faye Jean McAlister.
Smithson was also known as "Mojo Cole", "Juke Boy", and "Harmonica Man", due to his local success in bands like the Ditch Band and Scott McQuaig and the Tom Cats. The caring soul will be missed by family and friends alike, and will be remembered as a shimmering light in the dark, somber world we live in. A memorial service will be held later this month.
