Fred's Story

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home with Dr. Carl White officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Fred Markham Rhodes, Sr., age 85, went to his Heavenly Home on June 17, 2017. His final days were spent being cared for by his family at home. His love and care for his family and his firm belief in God guided his life. Fred was a deacon and a faithful member of Highland Baptist Church for forty seven years. His love for the Lord created a desire to help and care for anyone needing help. It would always involve fixing something or providing transportation to and from church, the doctor or whatever was needed.
Fred was born to Gladys Rhodes Peterson and Ernest McLeod Rhodes in Lake City, Florida on December 23, 1931. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951. He served honorably for 20 years where he retired achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He continued his work life by going to for work for the Federal Aviation Administration, where he set down roots in Meridian, Mississippi. He retired a second time in January, 1992. Fred had a gift for understanding how things worked mechanically and electronically. He liked to stay busy so he began to work part time with Meridian Public Schools, Technology Department.
Fred was a dedicated and loving Husband and Daddy. After meeting on a blind date, he married Helen Delores Shelton, 61 years ago on February 18, 1956. Together they raised three children. He is survived by Karen Lee Rhodes, Deborah Jean Grissett (Bill) and Fred Markham (Mark) Rhodes, Jr. Step Grandchildren, Amanda Franklin (Eddie) and Patrick Grissett (Jessica May) and two Step Great Granddaughters, Avery Franklin and Morgan Grissett as well as many cousins, nephews, and a niece.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Rhodes Peterson; father, Ernest McLeod Rhodes; sister, Mildred Ann Rhodes Frank and brother, Kenneth Edwin Rhodes.
Pallbearers will be Dave Carr, Charles Vick, Jerry Ricks, Quinn Carlisle, Dr. Dan Fulton and Douglas Rhodes. The family would like to thank Mr. Freds physicians and caregivers who allowed him to stay at home during his illness. They are Dr. Rhonda Wilson, Dr. Dale Touchstone and Halcyon Hospice.
Memorials may be sent to Highland Baptist Church, Meridian, Mississippi.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home.
