Gladys Brown Chess


Gladys Brown Chess, 88, of Meridian passed away Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017, at her home.

Her final arrangements were made by her loving friend and caregiver Carrie Chapman of Livingston, Ala., and funeral arrangements were performed by Cedric D. Clark Memorial Funeral Home of Meridian, Friday, Sept. 15, 2017.

She was laid to rest at a small cemetery in Millville where her deceased mother, brother, and sister were also buried. Pastor Johnathan Byrd officiated the ceremony attended by family members and friends.

Mrs. Chess opened and operated Chess Cleaners in Meridian and also worked at Rush Foundation Hospital for many years.

She was active in many organizations and was a volunteer for a number of organizations including the American Red Cross.

She was a native of Sumter County, Ala. and grew up in Grant City. While living in York, she was a member of First Baptist Church and was one of the founders of the Harvest Tea Program.

She was a member of North Crest Baptist Church in Meridian when she died.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Chatman Chess, her mother, sister, and a host of friends.
