Funeral services for Lt. Col. Robert D. "Dave" Scales will be held Friday, Jan. 31, 2020, at 11 a.m., at Druid Hills Methodist Church. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Mississippi Veterans Cemetery in Newton. Stephens Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements. Lt. Col. Scales, 72, of Collinsville, was retired from the Mississippi Air National Guard where he served as a pilot, safety officer and flight instructor during his tour of duty. He also was an Amateur Radio Operator (HAM) and loved anything electronic. He constructed his own ham radio and was very active providing emergency communications during disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. He enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves and was avid Gunsmoke fan. He loved life, his family and was a most devoted father to his children, grandfather, and husband to Beverly for 50 years.
Along with his wife, survivors include his children Dr. Charles Webb Scales (Theresa) of Ponte Vedro, Fla., Suzanne Scales Rutherford (Robert) of Jackson, Miss.; his grandchildren: Gregory James Scales, George Nelson Rutherford, Margaret Elizabeth Rutherford along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. James Webb Scales and Dorothy Scales; brothers James Webb Scales Jr., Arthur Paul Scales and sister Joyce Scales Orr.
Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to PilotsforChrist.net or the new Meridian Veterans Park to be constructed.
