Mrs. Thornton, 95, of Meridian, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019, at Anderson Regional Medical Center of Meridian.
Mae Carroll was born in Meridian, Miss. in 1924, and was a graduate of Meridian High and Mississippi State College for Women where she graduated with a B.A. in Art. She had a lifelong passion for art and continued to paint throughout the years; a joy she passed on to her family. She had a keen eye and love for nature, always looking at her surroundings and enjoying God's gifts to us, as well as encouraging others to see these things as well. Mrs. Thornton was a member of Central United Methodist Church of Meridian and was involved in numerous community organizations and endeavors throughout her life. Mae Carroll was devoted to her husband and family; she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She touched many people and was a blessing to those who knew her.
Mae Carroll is survived by her children, Carroll Thornton Chapin (Christopher), Gayle Thornton Callahan (Joel), Bill Thornton (Sheri), and Lee Thornton (Michelle); grandchildren, Katie Haden (Ryan), Matt Thornton, Will Fuchs, Kinsey Rohrer (Michael), Madison Thornton, Hannah Thornton, and Lachlan Thornton, as well as a host of extended family.
Mrs. Thornton is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Dr. William Lewis Thornton; mother, Katie Lee Keeton; step-father, Clarence Keeton; and father, Lovell Harrison.
Pallbearers will be Bill Thornton, Lee Thornton, Chris Chapin, Joel Callahan, Matt Thornton, Will Fuchs, Lach Thornton, Michael Rohrer, and Ryan Haden.
The family suggests memorials be made as donations to the Mae Carroll Thornton Scholarship Fund at Meridian Community College in lieu of flowers.
